How Physical Therapists Can Support Breastfeeding

  • Physical therapists can be one part of a team approach to help people reach their breastfeeding goals.

  • Physical Therapist’s know anatomy and biomechanics: if people are struggling with pain or milk production could it be due in part to body changes that occur with pregnancy and/or postpartum? Rib angle changes, shortened pectoral muscles, decreased tissue extensibility, ect.

  • Orthopedic pain often occurs with breastfeeding: physical therapist’s can help with postural strengthening and troubleshooting holding positions tailored to orthopedic concerns. It is important to help Moms feed, but also to help them good while feeding.

  • Physical Therapists can help with clogged ducts: manual lymph drainage techniques, soft tissue mobilizations and stretching, and using ultrasound for assistance with breaking up a clog.

  • Physical therapists can work on general postpartum physical health: pelvic floor physical therapy, core strengthening, postural strengthening, and scar tissue mobilization.

  • Physical Therapist’s have a valuable place in postpartum recovery no matter what, but can also help clients reach their breastfeeding goals.
